WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Oklahoma's Gerald Laird hit a grand slam and Sacramento's Matt Watson hit a two-run homer, leading the Pacific Coast League to an 11-5 victory over the International League in last night's Triple-A All-Star Game.
It was 100 degrees for the first pitch at Raley Field, home of the Sacramento River Cats, Oakland's Class AAA affiliate. The game drew a sellout crowd of 14,414.
The Tacoma Rainiers were to have been represented by Felix Hernandez, who had been named the PCL's starting pitcher, and outfielder Chris Snelling. But Hernandez missed the game because he is recovering from bursitis in his throwing shoulder, and Snelling was recalled by the Mariners last week.
Edwin Encarnacion of Louisville hit a solo homer and a sacrifice fly for the IL, which had won the previous two All-Star games. After Encarnacion's one-out homer in the second inning, the IL didn't get a runner past first base until the seventh. PCL pitchers retired 13 of 14 batters during that stretch.
