Former major-league pitcher Bob Wells of Cowiche was upgraded to satisfactory condition yesterday at Harborview Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Wells, 37, who received a head injury at a Yakima bar early Thursday, has been removed from intensive care and is talking with family and friends, according to a statement the family issued through the hospital.

Susan Gregg-Hanson, Harborview media relations manager, said the family would not take questions.

The statement said Wells sustained a small head wound, a broken nose, a cut on the lip and complained of pain in his elbow.

But the statement also contended Wells had been the victim of an assault at The Speakeasy Sports and Spirits in Yakima shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday.

Yakima police, meanwhile, continue to say no assault occurred and that Wells sustained the injuries after he was removed from the bar and tried to re-enter by hitting the door.

Police Detective David Kellett said officers and ambulance personnel said Wells became belligerent with the emergency personnel called to the scene. At that time, officers checked his pockets and located 8 grams of marijuana.

Schneider said Wells will be issued a summons to appear in municipal court for misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Wells played nine years in the major leagues, including four with the Seattle Mariners. He last pitched for the Minnesota Twins in the 2002 season and was on Tampa Bay's spring roster before being cut.
