YAKIMA — Major league pitcher Bob Wells, who spent four seasons with the Seattle Mariners, suffered a head injury outside a bar here and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Wells was in serious condition this morning, a nursing supervisor said.

Police Capt. Jeff Schneider said Wells, of Cowiche, was found outside the bar Thursday bleeding from a head injury. Witnesses said he had apparently been in an argument with two patrons and was asked to leave.

Police said outside, Wells ran into the door, hitting his head and falling to the ground. He was unconscious for some time.

The 37-year-old Wells last pitched for the Minnesota Twins in the 2002 season. He was traded to and later released by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in April.

Wells spent nine seasons in the majors, including four seasons with the Seattle Mariners. He won 40 games during his career, including a career-best 12 wins with Seattle in 1996.
