PORTLAND, Ore. —

Hundreds of out-of-staters have obtained Oregon medical marijuana cards.

The Oregonian ( http://bit.ly/A3seJp) says nearly 600 non-residents have traveled to Oregon since June 2010, when the state began issuing the cards to out-of-staters.

In that same period, 72,000 cards were issued to Oregonians.

Some non-resident users of medical marijuana hope the cards provide some legal protection if they're arrested in a state where medical marijuana is illegal.

Of the out-of-state applications for Oregon medical marijuana cards, 309 came from Washington state residents, 138 came from Idaho came and 50 came from California.
