WINTHROP, Wash. —

Biathlon, which combines cross country skiing and marksmanship, is a popular winter sport in Europe, but it's a minor sport in America - except in Washington's Methow (MET'-how) Valley.

The Methow Valley Biathlon Team has 30 active members and boasts the largest junior biathlon program in the West.

Coach Betsey Devin-Smith of Winthrop started the program in 2002, partly to keep her son Casey Smith interested in cross country skiing. "If you ski, you get to shoot the gun again."

The Wenatchee World reports (http://is.gd/rdzvXk) the now 19-year-old Casey Smith is in Europe, training with the U.S. National Team for his third Junior World Championship competition.
