WENATCHEE — Scott Hopkins started right after Halloween putting up his brightly lit Christmas yard display.
But three nights of juvenile mischief prompted him to take it all down early.
"We've been getting a lot of knocks on our door from people asking where the display went," Hopkins said Friday. So he put up a sign to explain.
Hopkins said he flipped on the lights on his annual display just after Thanksgiving. On the night of Dec. 4, someone stole a 3-foot lighted snowman from his yard. He put up a surveillance camera to catch any more attempts to steal items.
Then last weekend, the house was targeted three nights in a row. On Saturday, two juveniles in hooded sweatshirts attempted to take nutcrackers, signs and other items and messed up the display. Hopkins chased them away and turned the video footage over to police.
Then next day, 3-foot-tall lighted candles were taken from his yard.
After another incident Sunday night, Hopkins took down the entire display on Monday.
"Three nights in a row was enough," he said. It was too much stress staying up trying to wait for them to come back."
Hopkins said he is putting out a lighted Nativity scene for a short time in the evening, but bringing it back in at night. The surveillance cameras are still on.
Hopkins said he has been putting up the ornate Christmas display for about five years now.
"It's fun," he said. "We love it. People come by and take pictures."
He's not sure if he will do it again next year, though.
Wenatchee police Sgt. John Kruse said it's not unusual to have vandalism and thefts of yard decorations during the holidays, particularly Halloween and Christmas. But he said it is uncommon to have the same house hit this many times.
