Chili peppers recalled
![]()
California-based Cal Fresco is recalling fresh jalapeño and Serrano chili peppers that were distributed to retail stores in Washington, Alaska, California, Oregon, Texas and Canada in early December. They might be contaminated with salmonella, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
No illnesses have been reported from eating the peppers, which came from Mexico and were shipped under the Cal Fresco and Grower Alliance labels and are typically sold in bulk with no retail packaging.
Retailers who received the shipments were told to remove and destroy any remaining product in their inventories, but consumers who bought peppers matching that description between Dec. 3 and Dec. 21 should contact the store where they bought them to find out if the peppers came in the recalled shipments.
The recall was the result of a random sampling done Dec. 12 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which did not give results of the report to Cal Fresco until Dec. 19, according to a Cal Fresco news release on the FDA's website.
