An anonymous donor bequeathed $50 million to Seattle Children's hospital, the largest single gift in Children's 104-year history.
The bequest was part of $65 million in gifts announced over the weekend at a Children's Celebration of Hope gathering attended by 300 friends of Children's and marking the 30th anniversary of its fundraising division, known as the Children's Foundation.
In addition to the anonymous bequest, Jean Reid of Bellevue donated $15 million to support Children's Bellevue urgent-care clinic as well as its clinic and surgery center.
In recognition of her gift, Children's Bellevue Clinic and Surgery Center will be renamed the Robert and Jean Reid Bellevue Clinic and Surgery Center.
Jean Reid made the donation in memory of her husband, Robert Reid, 90, who died in January. From Reid's gift, $1 million will go to the urgent-care clinic at the Bellevue center, $10.5 million to the general Bellevue clinic and $3.5 million into nursing education.
The $50 million bequest will help fund Seattle Children's Research Institute, which works to uncover new treatments and cures for children's illnesses.
Robert Reid was a leader in East King County's construction industry. He was active in forming the city of Bellevue and was a Chamber of Commerce president.
