A freight train struck and killed a woman Thursday morning on the tracks at Carkeek Park in Seattle.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas said the crew blew the whistle and engaged emergency brakes, but the 63-car train could not stop in time. The crew said the woman was kneeling in the middle of the track.

Her name has not been released, but she was believed to be in her 50s, police said.

Seattle police said a suspicious device that appeared to be a homemade pipe bomb was found near the woman's body. Bomb-squad officers later determined it was harmless.

Four freight trains and one passenger train were delayed, but the line reopened at 1:45 p.m., Melonas said.

It was the fourth train fatality in the Seattle area since Aug. 5.
