More than 50 animals rescued from an illegal "puppy mill" near Lake Stevens will be up for adoption soon.

Snohomish County authorities on Friday seized 40 dogs, six cats and six birds from a home in the 9100 block of 42nd Street Northeast. The owner of the illegal kennel was found dead in his home Friday afternoon, and his death is under investigation, authorities said.

The animals were found living in small crates, and likely had been without food or water for three days, said Vicki Lubrin, manager of licensing and Animal Control services.

The county had investigated the kennel recently, and the owner was breeding animals for sale, she said.

One bird, a cockatiel, was found dead, but all other animals are being cared for at the Everett Animal Shelter. Included are two Italian greyhounds, some papillons and miniature pinschers.

The animals will be available for adoption through the shelter. Donations to cover food, cleaning and medical expenses are being sought, Lubrin said. For more information, call 425-257-6000.
