Bicyclist dies in train accident

A 47-year-old bicyclist from Kent died Tuesday night after he was hit by a train, according to a news release by the Kent Police Department.

A 47-year-old bicyclist from Kent died Tuesday night after he was hit by a train, according to a news release by the Kent Police Department.

Police said Lonnie Moss was traveling east on Gowe Street in Kent when he bypassed the downed traffic-control gates and rode into the path of a passenger train. The train was traveling north on the BNSF tracks when it struck the bicyclist at 9:17 p.m., according to the release.

Police said the Gowe Street crossing is equipped with large gates, red flashing signals and bells. At the time of the accident the cyclist was wearing a helmet and radio headphones and investigators believe this may have limited his ability to hear the approaching train.

“It is extremely important that motorists, pedestrians and cyclists not take rail-crossing safety for granted and obey the signals,” said Kent police Lt. Pat Lowery in a statement.

In a second accident, a man was struck and killed by a train early Wednesday morning in Marysville in what police are calling a likely suicide.

The man, who has not been identified, was hit just after 3 a.m., police say.
