Likely interim superintendent is experienced educator

The woman likely to become interim superintendent of Seattle Public Schools is an experienced administrator who once taught high-school English and has degrees from Stanford University, Harvard University and the University of California, Berkeley.

Susan Enfield, 42, joined Seattle Public Schools in 2009. She was hired by schools Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson, who is likely to be ousted by the School Board Wednesday night over a financial scandal.

The School Board will then vote on a motion to appoint Enfield to replace Goodloe-Johnson, effective immediately.

School Board Member Kay Smith-Blum said that the district is lucky to have someone of Enfield's caliber to step into the district's top post.

"We have a very solid candidate to guide us through," she said.

Enfield came to Seattle from Evergreen Public Schools in Vancouver, Wash., where she served as deputy superintendent from 2006-2009. Before that, she was director of teaching and learning for Portland Public Schools.

Enfield started her career as a high-school teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area. According to her résumé, Enfield has a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of California at Berkeley and master's degrees in education from Stanford and Harvard. She also earned a doctorate in administration, planning and social policy at Harvard.
