Oregon considers shooting barred owls
PORTLAND — Federal wildlife officials are looking for ways to protect spotted owls from larger, more aggressive barred owls.
PORTLAND — Federal wildlife officials are looking for ways to protect spotted owls from larger, more aggressive barred owls.
The Oregonian says a draft environmental impact statement to be ready by summer most likely will recommend shooting barred owls. Over the next year, in three or more study areas from Washington to northern California, they might kill 1,200 to 1,500 barred owls.
Other measures have been tried to help spotted owls, which are listed as an endangered species. But those measures have failed.
It's a wrenching decision that has split wildlife biologists and environmentalists.
