Newspaper: No proof Hanford mixers will work

The Seattle Times is reporting that builders of mixers critical to stirring radioactive waste at the Hanford nuclear reservation haven't proved that the system will work.

The Associated Press

RICHLAND, Wash. —

The Seattle Times is reporting that builders of mixers critical to stirring radioactive waste at the Hanford nuclear reservation haven't proved that the system will work.

The newspaper says that in its interviews and review of audits and documents, it found the "pulse-jet mixers" are still unproven despite hundreds of millions of dollars spent and a decade of effort. The mixers, part of Hanford's cleanup effort, would use air and suction to stir radioactive sludge in dozens of holding vessels to keep it from concentrating and posing a risk of an explosion.

The federal Department of Energy and its Hanford contractors tell The Times that they've solved the mixing problem, but have agreed to conduct new tests.
