Explosion blows off South Lake Union utility hole covers, knocks out power

An underground explosion knocked out power in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood and blew utility hole covers several feet in the air.

The Associated Press

SEATTLE —

An underground explosion knocked out power in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood and blew utility hole covers several feet in the air.

Seattle City Light spokesman Scott Thomsen says it may have been caused by a cable failure. More than 450 customers in the area lost power, including parts of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Hutchinson Center employee Lisabeth Bull was in the area near Yale and Aloha Streets on Wednesday afternoon and said she saw utility hole covers jump several feet in the air. Brown smoke started billowing out of them.

Police and fire crews closed off the streets.
