OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Another 1,272 Washington teachers earned their National Board Certification in 2010.

That means Washington teachers are the second most successful group in the nation at achieving national certification this year. No. 1 in 2010 is North Carolina.

Three districts in the state ranked in the top 20 nationally in new board certified teachers. Seattle ranked sixth nationally with 71 teachers earning certification, while Evergreen ranked 14th and Bellevue 20th.

A total of 115 of the stateÂÂ's 295 districts now have at least five nationally board certified teachers.

Created in 1987, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is an independent organization devoted to advancing the quality of teaching and learning.
