Photo: Vending machine dispenses blood

Andrea Nordmark, lab supervisor at Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue, takes a package of blood from the HemoSafe, a vending machine for blood. You won't get a Diet Coke from this vending machine, but Overlake Hospital Medical Center staffers who need some blood or plasma for a patient can get it quickly from the HemoSafe, a "smart refrigerator" that dispenses the proper type for an individual patient. The machine, developed with the Puget Sound Blood Center, is intended to reduce transport time and potential for mistakes in handling. The blood center plans to install the machines in other local hospitals in the near future.
