Outages affected 230,000 customers, power being restored Tuesday

High winds caused major power outages throughout Puget Sound, but utilities hope have it restored Tuesday.

High winds that gusted at more than 40 miles an hour at one point blew down trees and downed power lines, leaving more than 230,000 customers without power overnight in a wide area around Puget Sound.

Puget Sound Energy reported 140,000 customers lost power during the windstorm. By Tuesday morning, that number had been reduced to 80,000, in about 300 locations scattered throughout its service area outside Seattle. The utility hoped to get power restored to everyone Tuesday.

Tacoma Power reported 6,000 customers were without power Tuesday morning, down from 54,000 Monday night.

Snohomish County PUD said about 7,500 customers were without power Tuesday morning, down from 20,000 Monday night. Mike Thorne, spokesman for the utility, said winds of 40 miles an hour were reported in Everett overnight.

Seattle City Light had just a handful of customers in the dark Tuesday morning, down from 17,000 — mostly in West Seattle and the Rainier Valley.
