Morning earthquake shook Morton in Lewis County

A small, magnitude-4.2 earthquake struck this morning near Morton in Lewis County.

An earthquake rattled the town of Morton in Lewis County early this morning.

The earthquake, which hit shortly before 8 a.m., measured about a magnitude 4.2 and was about five miles deep, according to John Vidale, chief of the University of Washington seismology lab.

The quake was centered about 6.2 miles west of Morton.

The shaking, though relatively light, was felt as far north as Edmonds and as far south as Portland, Vidale said. People on the coast and in Yakima also reported feeling it.

He hadn't heard of any damage reported.

Alice Fiman, who works for the state Department of Transportation in Olympia, said she was on the second floor of the headquarters building when the quake occurred. She said it felt like the building moved and her chair started vibrating.

But she said those on the building's first floor didn't even feel it.
