Sound Transit buying Beacon Hill house on edge of hole

Sound Transit is paying $476,350 to a couple whose home was nearly swallowed by a void, after the Beacon Hill Tunnel project removed too much soil.

Sound Transit is paying $476,350 to a couple whose home was nearly swallowed by a void after the Beacon Hill Tunnel project removed too much soil.

Christine Miller-Panganiban discovered a 21-foot-deep hole in her yard, at 2605 18th Ave. S., in March 2009. She and her husband, Rommel Panganiban, will receive $400,000 for the house, $11,350 for giving work crews access to the property and $65,000 compensation for stress.

The couple are expected to move, and Sound Transit will eventually sell the house, said transit spokesman Bruce Gray. The claim was settled without a lawsuit, said the Panganibans' attorney, Diana Dearmin.

The transit agency has spent $2 million to date filling several voids, and will work at least another month to drill test holes and adding soil as needed. Sound Transit seeks to recover the costs from its tunnel contractor, Obayashi Corp.
