17-year-old hit by light rail train on MLK Jr. Way

A 17-year-old girl was hit by a Link Light Rail train on Saturday while running against the light in a Seattle intersection, Transit police said.

A 17-year-old girl was hit by a Link Light Rail train on Saturday while running against the light in a Seattle intersection, Sound Transit police said.

The girl was taken to Harborview Medical Center and was expected to live, police said.

The accident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Way and South Graham Street, said Ron Griffin, chief of Sound Transit Police.

Three girls dashed across Martin Luther King Jr. Way, against the light, as a southbound train approached, Griffin said. The first two girls cleared the intersection, but the third was struck.

The train’s driver hit the emergency break upon seeing the girls, but was unable to stop in time, Griffin said.

Service on the train system was interrupted for about 50 minutes.

Investigators were still at the scene Saturday evening, working to reconstruct the accident.
