Record low oxygen content in south Hood Canal

The level of oxygen content in the south end of the Hood Canal is at a record low, and experts are worried it could lead to a massive fish kill.

The Associated Press

HOODSPORT, Wash. —

The level of oxygen content in the south end of the Hood Canal is at a record low, and experts are worried it could lead to a massive fish kill.

University of Washington oceanographer Jan Newton told The Kitsap Sun that the conditions are similar to 2006 when thousands of fish died and washed on beaches.

She says strong winds out of the south would bring low-oxygen waters to the surface, potentially killing thousands of fish in a short time.

The oxygen content of Hood Canal south of Dabob Bay reached a record low at the end of August, based on 40 to 50 years of data.
