SEATTLE —

After 40 years, transportation planners in Seattle say they're ready to clean up the Mercer Mess - the heavily traveled corridor along south Lake Union between Seattle Center and Interstate 5.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Sen. Patty Murray and other politicians had to face the rain Wednesday morning for a groundbreaking ceremony.

The project will re-align streets to reduce congestion in the corridor where about 80,000 people a day travel in cars, trucks, buses or on bikes or on foot.
