Monday is Labor Day, a federal holiday, and many businesses and public services will be closed or operate on a holiday schedule. Tuesday will be a furlough day for many state agencies, which means they will be closed that day, too.
Here's the guide to what's open, closed or operating on different schedules:
• Most banks and credit unions closed Monday.
• Most government offices closed Monday. Most state government offices also will be closed Tuesday.
Exceptions include health and safety workers, such as state troopers, prison guards and child-protection workers.
• Post offices closed Monday; no home mail delivery.
• Schools and public libraries closed Monday.
• On Monday, Metro Transit buses will operate on a Sunday schedule. If a route doesn't normally run Sunday, then it won't run Labor Day.
All Metro offices will be closed on the holiday, including the Customer Information Center phone lines. For information about transit service, see http://metro.kingcounty.gov/.
• The Bumbershoot Festival is at Seattle Center through Monday. There are no special Metro shuttles to the festival, but there is plenty of regular bus service to or near Seattle Center.
• The Elliott Bay Water Taxi will operate on a regular weekday schedule. The Water Taxi land shuttles, routes 773 and 775, also will operate on a weekday schedule. The Vashon Island Water Taxi won't operate Labor Day.
• Community Transit buses and DART paratransit service will not operate Monday. The RideStore also will be closed.

• Washington State Ferries' Anacortes/San Juan Islands route will run on a Sunday sailing schedule. Seattle-Bainbridge Island route will run on a Saturday schedule. Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth and Point Defiance/Tahlequah routes will run on a holiday schedule.
All other routes will operate on a normal Monday schedule. Check schedules online at: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/schedule/.
• Department of Licensing offices will be closed through Tuesday for the long weekend and then the employee furlough day. The agency advises those who need department services to use online options atwww.dol.wa.gov/ or to plan carefully to minimize their wait if they have to visit in person once offices reopen Wednesday.
• All Washington state Department of Health offices will be closed Monday and Tuesday.
• In Seattle, there will be normal garbage, yard-waste and recycling collection Monday.
• Most state-run liquor stores will be open Monday. Contract liquor stores also may be open that day. Contact contract stores directly for their holiday operating schedules.
