Body of missing climber found

A North Cascades National Park spokeswoman says a search helicopter on Friday afternoon spotted the body of John Arum, an experienced mountain climber who had been the object of a five-day search.

SEATTLE —

The body of John Arum, a climber who had been missing for days, was found Friday on Storm King Mountain, according to Kerry Olson, a spokeswoman for North Cascades National Park.

The body of the Seattle environmental lawyer was spotted on the mountain's north slope at around 4:30 p.m. by an aerial search team. Olson said they'd flown over the area before, but Arum's body had been hidden by snow that just melted Friday.

Arum, 49, had attempted to solo climb the mountain Aug. 28 and was reported missing Monday. His body has not been recovered, Olson said, because he is in a very steep area with loose rock that makes it difficult to rappel down to him, climb up, or land a helicopter. She said park personnel are working on other recovery methods.

Arum was the son of Hall of Fame boxing promoter Bob Arum.
