Man sentenced for holding child's head under water

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

A soldier who held his 4-year-old daughter's head under water in a kitchen sink because she would not recite the alphabet has been sentenced to two months in jail.

The Olympian newspaper says 27-year-old Joshua Ryan Tabor was sentenced Thursday in Thurston County Superior Court. Tabor, a Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier who lives in Yelm, earlier entered an Alford plea to three counts of third-degree felony assault of a child. Under an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit guilt but concedes there is enough evidence for conviction.

At the sentencing, prosecutors read a statement by a relative who now has custody of the girl, saying she has nightmares about her father trying to drown her and has suffered hearing loss caused by blows to the head.
