1996 UW grad named to oversee Pike Place Market

Ben Franz-Knight, a Washington native and 1996 University of Washington graduate, has been named new executive director for the Pike Place Market.

One of Seattle's most storied icons — home to fishmongers, musicians, meat-sellers and more — will be under new leadership this fall.

Ben Franz-Knight, a Washington native and 1996 University of Washington graduate, has been named new executive director for the Pike Place Market, the Market's Preservation and Development Authority announced on Thursday.

Franz-Knight replaces Carol Binder, who is retiring after five years overseeing the market.

"Carol Binder leaves the house in great order," Seattle City Councilmember Sally Clark said. "The Market always moves forward, and this transition is an exciting new chapter at the Market, one that is full of new opportunities."

Franz-Knight is leaving his job as executive director of Santa Monica Pier Restoration in California.

He said he's excited about his new job.

"I am honored and humbled by the opportunity and look forward to working with every stakeholder to preserve the wonder and magic that is Pike Place Market," he said.
