U.S. marshals say they returned fire during an arrest in Oregon and shot a man wanted on an attempted murder charge.
The U.S. Marshals Service did not identify the man shot Thursday in Portland, but said he was the suspect in a shooting a day earlier in neighboring Clark County, Wash.
Marshals said the man was taken to a hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
The victim in the Wednesday incident was identified as Steven L. McKnight, 29, who was listed in stable condition at a hospital Thursday with four gunshot wounds.
Marshals were assisting Vancouver, Wash., police in the arrest of the shooting suspect, who was also wanted for a parole violation.
Vancouver authorities had issued an arrest warrant for Adam Shane Berndt, 23, in the Wednesday shooting but did not say whether he was the man shot Thursday.
Marshals said the attempted murder suspect emerged from a northeast Portland house and began firing shots as police tried to arrest him shortly after noon.
The Portland Police Bureau set up a perimeter around the house, where other people remained. A police spokeswoman said the people inside the building emerged Thursday afternoon and were to be interviewed by investigators.
