Officer shoots Wedgwood QFC employee in attempted arrest

A Wedgwood QFC employee suspected of domestic violence was shot by a police officer inside the store when officers went there to arrest him Monday night.

The man, in his 30s, was suspected of a felony the night before, said Seattle police spokesman Mark Jamieson. A store employee confirmed the wounded man worked there.

When officers arrived to arrest the man shortly before 8:20 p.m., he fought them, Jamieson said, and pulled a gun from his waistband. That's when one of the officers fired. The suspect did not fire a shot, Jamieson said.

A Seattle Fire Department spokeswoman said the man, in his 30s, had a gunshot wound to his back. He wasn't breathing when he was taken by ambulance from the store, at 8400 35th Ave. N.E., to Harborview Medical Center. His condition wasn't available Monday night.

Customer Harker Hearne said he walked into the store just after the shooting and before police closed it to begin their investigation. He said he saw the man lying face down, unconscious, near the bathrooms in the back of the store.

A store employee said he did not hear gunshots and didn't know there was an incident until the police came in and locked down the store.

Jamieson did not release any more information about the suspect, the officer who shot him or the alleged domestic-violence incident from Sunday night.
