BLANCHARD, Idaho — The Idaho State Police say a motorist struck two participants in the Spokane to Sandpoint relay on Saturday, killing one and injuring another on U.S. Highway 41 near Blanchard in northern Idaho.

Police say the person who died was on a bicycle and was likely shadowing the other participant, who was covering a portion of the 185-mile team foot race from Spokane to Sandpoint.

Police say the runner is in serious condition.

Police say the 31-year-old driver hit the two competitors at about 6:30 a.m., and that alcohol may be a factor in the crash.

Names have not been released.
