Vote on expanding light rail looking unlikely in 2011

The odds are dwindling that Seattle voters will see a ballot measure by 2011 to fund light rail from downtown to West Seattle and Ballard, as Mayor Mike McGinn promised in his campaign last year.

The odds are dwindling that Seattle voters will see a ballot measure by 2011 to fund light rail from downtown to West Seattle and Ballard, as Mayor Mike McGinn promised in his campaign last year.

The timeline could slip for two reasons, he said Wednesday. City Council members are expected to propose a property-tax levy next year to rebuild the Elliott Bay sea wall, hurting the odds for a rail measure at the same time. Also, McGinn said the council has slowed work on a transit master plan, to include rail.

Councilman Nick Licata said the city should focus instead on helping King County Metro Transit deliver reliable daily bus service every 15 minutes, 18 hours a day.
