Dog overboard: Couple hoping he made it to shore in Ship Canal

A Kitsap County couple is searching for an American Eskimo dog that slipped off a boat Sunday near the Ballard Locks.

Danae Clarke had just cleared the Ballard Locks headed toward Lake Union in her speedboat Sunday when she discovered her American Eskimo dog Dimitri had slipped from his harness and gone into the water.

Frantic, she and her boyfriend searched until midnight for the 18-month-old dog, but were unable to find him. She's called Seattle Animal Control and the Humane Society, but no one has reported finding the dog.

"He was like my kid," said Clarke, who lives in Silverdale, Kitsap County. "I'm freaking out. I just turned my back for a split second." She said the dog can swim. He doesn't have a tag on because the harness came off.

Anyone who finds the all-white dog is asked to call Clarke at 360-633-5054 or Michael Brewster at 360-990-5869.
