Gov. forms higher education funding task force

Gov. Chris Gregoire has formed a task force to find stable money to pay for the state's four-year public universities.

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) -- Gov. Chris Gregoire has formed a task force to find stable money to pay for the state's four-year public universities. In announcing the new group on Wednesday, the governor said Washington businesses need a skilled work force and the state has to make sure its higher-education system is filling that need. Gregoire wants to increase degree production by 30 percent over the next decade, while dealing with budget deficits. She wants the task force to make a viable, long-range budget plan; recommend way to improve accountability and performance of the state's universities; and consider whether changes should be made in the way the state governs its higher education system. The task force will be chaired by Microsoft's Brad Smith.
