Emergency training exercises end with a bang

The last day of training exercises Wednesday in vacant Fort Lawton housing in Seattle’s Discovery Park ended with a bang — actually, a series of loud bangs.

The last day of training exercises Wednesday in vacant Fort Lawton housing in Seattle’s Discovery Park ended with a bang — actually, a series of loud bangs.

The site has been used over the past few weeks for training by hundreds of first responders, including the Seattle Fire Department and the Seattle Police Department SWAT team.

Wednesday, it was the turn of the King County Sheriff’s Office and the Army Rangers from Fort Lewis. They produced bangs loud enough that it sounded like “fireworks on steroids” to one area resident.

On Thursday, the last of the vacant housing will be torn down. The 23-acre Fort Lawton site will be turned over to the city of Seattle later this year to become an extension of the park.
