Tattoo, body piercing licensing starts Thursday

People who perform body piercing, tattoos and other types of body art and permanent makeup in Washington state will soon be licensed.

The Associated Press

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

People who perform body piercing, tattoos and other types of body art and permanent makeup in Washington state will soon be licensed.

Starting Thursday, people working in the industry must start applying to get a $250 annual license, under a law that was passed last year. Businesses who employ them must also get a license, at $300 a year.

The law requires that all shops have an inspection, and Department of Licensing officials says all shops will be inspected on a 2-year rotation.

Officials say they'll ensure uniform safety and sanitation practices when it comes to tattoos, piercing or any other type of body art, which includes the use of branding and scars.
