NW drivers' gas use up, environmental think tank says

As gasoline prices eased in 2009, drivers in the Northwest used more, reversing a 10-year trend of less consumption.

As gasoline prices eased in 2009, drivers in the Northwest used more, reversing a 10-year trend of less consumption.

Residents of Washington, Oregon and Idaho bought an average 7.5 gallons a week, up from 7.4 gallons the year before, according to an analysis released Wednesday by Sightline, a pro-environment think tank. Diesel fuel used by trucks declined, however, due to the recession.

British Columbia gas use spiked while preparing for the Winter Olympics, despite a new provincial tax, the report says.

Sightline suggests carbon or pollution taxes to curb demand, and criticized bridge projects that increase road lanes in Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver B.C.

The report can be found at www.sightline.org/research/energy/res_pubs/shifting-gears.pdf
