Amtrak train strikes, kills pedestrian near Puyallup

A northbound Amtrak Cascades train struck and killed a female pedestrian around 6 p.m. Thursday in Puyallup, causing delays in the regional freight and transit lines.

A northbound Amtrak Cascades train struck and killed a female pedestrian around 6 p.m. Thursday in Puyallup, causing delays in the regional freight and transit lines.

Two southbound Sounder commuter trains were held in Sumner, and buses were sent to carry Sounder passengers to Puyallup and Tacoma.

The rail corridor reopened at 7:15 p.m. with north- and southbound trains alternating on a single track, said Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Romero. A southbound Cascades train going to Eugene had a 45-minute delay, she said.

The train involved in the accident is being held at Puyallup until a replacement crew arrives, Romero said, something not uncommon after a traumatic incident. She had no details about the location or circumstances of the accident.
