Marysville school board asks member to resign

The Marysville School Board voted 4-0 to ask the fifth member, Michael Kundu, to resign over an e-mail he sent linking race to the minority student achievement gap.

MARYSVILLE, Wash. —

The Marysville School Board voted 4-0 to ask the fifth member, Michael Kundu, to resign over an e-mail he sent linking race to the minority student achievement gap.

Kundu was not at Monday night's meeting. He has said the e-mail earlier this month was intended for discussion among school district leaders and that he is not a racist.

About 150 people attended the meeting and many called the e-mail offensive. They applauded after the vote to censure Kundu. Since he is an elected official, he cannot be removed by the board.

About one-third of the 12,000 students in the Marysville district are minorities.
