Funding OK'd in South Park bridge project

With closure of the South Park Bridge only nine days away, the Metropolitan King County Council voted Monday to authorize the sale of $31 million in bonds to pay part of the cost of a new one.

With closure of the South Park Bridge only nine days away, the Metropolitan King County Council voted Monday to authorize the sale of $31 million in bonds to pay part of the cost of a new one.

The bonds won't prevent closure of the deteriorating bridge, which carries 20,000 vehicles a day across the Duwamish River, but shows a local commitment as the county applies for federal stimulus funds for bridge replacement. The Seattle City Council last week pledged $15 million toward the $131 million project.

The bonds would be repaid with revenues from the unincorporated-area road levy. The bridge is scheduled to close June 30.
