An Eckstein Middle School eighth-grader has taken first in a national computer-aided design contest.

Maxwell Krist competed against high-school students in the Extreme Redesign challenge, for which students were required to redesign an everyday object.

Krist's entry was a mock-up for a device to monitor the amount of electricity used by home appliances. He designed it on a computer, then using rapid prototyping machinery in his pre-engineering class, produced a three-dimensional model.

His prize is a $2,500 scholarship.
