Cellphone law gets tougher Thursday

Using a handheld phone while driving could now cost you $124.

Using a handheld phone while driving could now cost you $124.

A state law taking effect Thursday makes cellphone infractions a primary offense, meaning police can stop motorists for that alone. Under a previous law, officers could not pull over cellphone users unless they were also committing another offense.

Text-messaging while driving is also banned.

Using a cellphone with a hands-free device or headset is allowed, although drivers younger than 18 and those with instructional permits are not allowed any cellphone use while driving, except in emergencies.

Cellphone violations will not become part of a person's driving record.
