A long-awaited draft plan for aquatic lands in Whatcom County provides more environmental protection but is raising industry concern.

A long-awaited draft plan for aquatic lands in Whatcom County provides more environmental protection but is raising industry concern.
Washington Department of Natural Resources officials say its management plan for the Cherry Point Aquatic Reserve balances restoring Puget Sound while recognizing industries.
The Bellingham Herald reports SSA Marine vice president Bob Watters says the plan will have a negative impact on future and existing industries in the area.
BP and ConocoPhillips oil refineries and the Alcoa Intalco Works aluminum smelter have deep water docks in the area. SSA plans to build a bulk commodities terminal.
The plan identifies measures to help recover herring stocks, chinook salmon and other species and their habitat.
