What's open, closed for Memorial Day
Here is a roundup of what businesses and government services are open or operating and which are closed during the Memorial Day weekend.
On Monday, the legal Memorial Day observance, many cemeteries will be open from dawn to dusk to honor the day of remembrance.
• Most banks and credit unions will be closed.
• Most government offices closed.
• Post offices closed; no home mail delivery.
• Schools and public libraries closed.
• Most state-operated liquor stores and some contract stores will be open on Memorial Day. State-run stores will open at regular hours and close at 7 p.m. Store schedules and phone numbers are online at www.liq.wa.gov.
• Garbage, recycling, and food- and yard-waste collection in Seattle will be on normal schedule on Monday. Seattle Public Utilities customers with Monday pickups should place their containers out for collection by 7 a.m.
• Seattle's North Recycling and Disposal Station in the Fremont/Wallingford area and the South Recycling and Disposal Station in South Park will be open Monday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
• Some Seattle parks and recreation facilities will be closed over the Memorial Day weekend because of the Monday holiday and an employee furlough day Tuesday. On Memorial Day, parks will be on limited maintenance staffing. On Tuesday, Parks Department administrative offices and the Magnuson Park office will be closed.
Public transportation
• Metro Transit buses will run on a Sunday schedule on Memorial Day. Bus routes that do not normally operate on Sundays will be out of service on the holiday. All Metro offices will be closed Monday, including customer-information phone lines. Water-taxi service between West Seattle and downtown Seattle will run on its regular schedule on Monday, and so will shuttle routes 773 and 775 serving West Seattle. But there won't be water-taxi service between Vashon and downtown Seattle.
• The South Lake Union streetcar will run on its regular schedule. Light rail will run on its Sunday schedule on the holiday. The downtown transit tunnel will be open from 6 a.m. to midnight Sunday and Monday.

• Intercity Transit's local and Olympia Express services also will operate on a Sunday schedule.
• Heavy traffic is expected on all ferry routes during the weekend. Ferry riders should consider traveling outside of peak times to avoid the longest waits at terminals. Riders should be prepared for waits of two to three hours or more heading eastbound on Monday.
The Mukilteo/Clinton route will be on its Sunday schedule Monday. The Seattle/Bainbridge Island route will be on a Saturday schedule Monday. The Point Defiance/Tahlequah route will be on its weekend schedule Monday.
On Monday, the 2:20 p.m. sailing from Friday Harbor will go directly to Anacortes instead of its usual island stops. There will also be an extra sailing from Orcas to Anacortes at 3:20 p.m.
All other routes will be on their regular schedules throughout the holiday weekend. Details are online at www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/schedule.
