Joint Base soldier dies in Afghanistan

Spc. Wade A. Slack, 21, a soldier from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, died Thursday in Afghanistan.

Spc. Wade A. Slack, 21, a soldier from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, died Thursday in Afghanistan.

Slack, of Waterville, Maine, died at Jaghatu, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using indirect fire, according to a news release from the base.

His deployment to Afghanistan was his first.

Slack enlisted in 2006 and trained at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, and Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

At Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Slack was assigned to the 707th Ordnance Company (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), 3rd Ordnance Battalion (EOD).

His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge.
