Seattle-area garbage workers remain on job

Trash collectors represented by the Teamsters union remained on the job Thursday in the Seattle area after their contract expired because negotiations are continuing.

SEATTLE —

Trash collectors represented by the Teamsters union remained on the job Thursday in the Seattle area after their contract expired because negotiations are continuing.

Local 174 spokesman Michael Gonzales said the talks with Waste Management resumed late Thursday morning after a late-night session. He says employees will continue to work as long as good-faith talks are under way.

Company spokeswoman Jackie Lang says it's good news drivers are on the job and both sides are talking.

The talks Wednesday resulted in a tentative agreement with another garbage company, Allied Waste, and another bargaining group, Teamsters Local 117, which represents recycling haulers.

The companies haul waste for about 1 million people in King and Snohomish counties.
