Seattle's Pearl Jam is donating $210,000 to the Cascade Land Conservancy to offset carbon emissions from the band's 2009 world tour. The money will be used to plant about 33 acres in the Puget Sound area with native trees and plants.
The conservancy estimates the carbon dioxide emissions from the band's 32-date tour at about 6,000 tons, based on travel, hotel rooms, show attendance and other factors. In a news release, Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard said Monday that the band views the offset as a cost of doing business.
Over the years Pearl Jam has donated tens of thousands of dollars to charity. In 1997, it teamed with Soundgarden and the conservancy to buy forest land in the Cascades.
