Public composting toilet at P-Patch
Seattle has acquired its first public composting toilet, and the new loo is located in the city's oldest P-Patch, Picardo Farm Garden.
For years, Picardo gardeners have wanted a permanent restroom, but there was no easy access to sewage systems. Gardeners voted in the early 2000s to work toward getting a composting toilet.
The new toilet, a Clivus Multrum, composts waste with the help of a solar-powered bilge pump and solar-powered fans produce fresh air.
The city's Department of Neighborhoods will host a celebratory opening of the toilet at 12:30 p.m. April 3 at the P-Patch, 25th Avenue Northeast and Northwest 82nd Street.
Potty jokes are optional.
Information in this story, published Mar. 25, was corrected Mar. 26. The P-Patch is located at 25th Avenue Northeast and Northwest 82nd Street. A previous version of this story stated it was located at 25th Avenue Northwest.
