WTA names new director

Brian Windrope has been named executive director of the Washington Trails Association, the organization announced Wednesday.

Brian Windrope has been named executive director of the Washington Trails Association, the organization announced Wednesday.

Windrope replaces longtime Director Elizabeth Lunney, who announced last year that she would step down as leader of the organization, which works in support of state hiking trails and wild lands. He'll start his new role in mid-April.

Windrope, whose passion for the wild was clinched by a solo backpacking trip through the Sierra Nevada, has executive experience with a number of outdoors-related groups in Washington, Oregon and California. They include San Juan Preservation Trust, Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center, Guided Discoveries, and NatureBridge (formerly Yosemite National Institutes).

"I'm just so fortunate to be able to give back to the places I love in such a concrete way," he said.
