Deputies: Essay contest for Seaside motel a scam

Investigators say an essay contest to win a Seaside beach house was a scam.

SEASIDE, Ore. — Investigators say an essay contest to win a Seaside beach house was a scam.

Clatsop County Sheriff Tom Bergin says Theodore Zennie took the $99 entry fees and spent them on drugs. Zennie had claimed on a Web site he would give the contest's winner his beach house in Seaside, a former motel with three stand-alone studios and a short walk to the Oregon Coast.

The state attorney general ordered Zennie to take down the Web site last July, but investigators say he continued to promote the scam. He was arrested last week.

It's not clear how many people entered the contest.
