Broken water main leads to gas leak in West Seattle

About a hundred households in West Seattle remained without water Monday night after a water-main break turned into a natural-gas leak, authorities said.

About a hundred households in West Seattle remained without water Monday night after a water-main break turned into a natural-gas leak, authorities said.

The gas leak, at 49th Avenue Southwest and Southwest Canada Street, apparently was caused by an errant backhoe after utilities crews responded to a report of bubbling water in the vicinity that afternoon.

"That's how it started," said Seattle Public Utilities spokesman Andy Ryan. "Some kind of leak in a 16-inch water main."

Seattle Fire Department crews were posted nearby as a precaution while Puget Sound Energy workers repaired the gas leak.

In addition to the 100 or so customers without water, Ryan said nine homes were without gas as well.
